Duplicate a course

Copy a course’s modules, lessons and settings into a new draft, and what does and doesn’t come across.

Duplicating makes a new draft course from an existing one, with its modules, lessons and settings. It's handy for running a course again for a new group, rebuilding a course without disturbing current members, or keeping a master course you copy for each new one. Nothing about your members comes across.

Who can do this

  • Owners, admins and staff can duplicate a course.
  • Viewers see the button, but clicking it shows "You don’t have permission to do that."
  • The copy is a new product, so it counts toward your plan's product limit. At the limit, you land on Catalog with a banner instead of a copy.
  • Only courses have a Duplicate button.

Duplicate a course

  1. Open the course builder from Catalog.
  2. Click Duplicate in the header.

  1. The copy opens in its own builder. Its title ends with (copy), for example "Watercolor Basics (copy)", and it's a draft.
  2. Rename it on its Settings tab, and make your changes.

What's copied

  • Modules, submodules and lessons, in the same order and nesting, with each module's description and image, and each lesson's title, text, video, Live or Draft status, release setting, free preview and comment setting.
  • Lesson quizzes and downloadable files.
  • The course description, thumbnail, format (Evergreen or Cohorts), cohort start date, course home styling and certificate settings.

The copy uses the same uploaded videos and files as the original. Removing or replacing a video or file in one course doesn't affect the other.

What isn't copied

  • People: members, progress, quiz results, comments and issued certificates stay with the original.
  • Offers and announcements. The copy isn't for sale until you create an offer for it.

When to duplicate

  • Cohort reruns: duplicate last round's course, set a new cohort start date on the copy, and sell it with a new offer while past members keep the original.
  • A big revamp: rebuild in the copy while members keep learning in the live course, then publish the copy and switch your offers over.
  • Your own template: keep an unpublished master course and duplicate it for each new course.

What happens next

  • The copy stays a draft until an owner or admin publishes it.
  • Its lessons keep their Live or Draft status from the original, so check them before publishing.

Common errors

  • You land on Catalog with You've reached your plan's product limit. Upgrade your plan to add more.: you're at your plan's product limit. Upgrade, or reuse an existing draft.
  • "You don’t have permission to do that.": viewers can't duplicate courses.
  • Nothing seems to happen when you click Duplicate: the copy may have stopped part-way. Check Catalog for a "(copy)" draft before clicking again; a partial copy can be finished by hand or left as a draft.
  • "Your free trial has ended, so your workspace is read-only. …": subscribe in Settings → Billing to duplicate courses again.
