Publish, unpublish or delete a page

Put a website or landing page live, publish later changes, take it offline, or delete it, and what each role can do.

A website page or landing page is a draft until someone publishes it. Publishing copies your saved draft to your live site. After that you can keep editing privately and publish the changes when they're ready, take the page offline again, or delete it. This article covers each, from the builder and from the lists.

Who can do this

  • Owners and admins can publish, publish changes, unpublish and delete.
  • Staff can edit and save drafts but can't publish. When they click Publish in the builder, the draft is saved, then the toolbar shows "You don’t have permission for this." Publish, Unpublish and Delete in the lists show "You don’t have permission to do that." Ask an admin to publish for you.
  • Viewers can't do any of these.

Publish from the builder

  1. Open the page from Website or Landing Pages and finish your edits.
  2. Click Publish. Your draft is saved first, then published. The toolbar says "Your changes are live".
  3. The status changes to Live, and View and Unpublish appear. With nothing new to publish, the button reads Published and is greyed out.

Publish changes to a live page

  1. Edit the page. As soon as you make a change, the status reads Live · unpublished changes and the button reads Publish changes.
  2. Click Save draft as often as you like: visitors keep seeing the published version.
  3. Click Publish changes when you're ready.

The title, URL and Members only box don't wait for this step: they change on the live page as soon as you save.

Publish from the list

  1. On Website Pages or Landing Pages, click Publish on a Draft row.
  2. The row changes to Live, with View and Unpublish.

This publishes the last saved draft. Edits still open, unsaved, in the builder aren't included.

Unpublish a page

  1. In the builder, click Unpublish. Your browser asks "Unpublish this page? Visitors will no longer be able to see it. Your content is kept as a draft." Click OK. The toolbar says "Unpublished — the page is now a draft".
  2. Or, in a list, click Unpublish on a live row. This happens at once, without asking.

Visitors then get "not found" at that address. If you unpublish Home, your address shows the holding page again, unless Homepage on the Domain page shows another published page there. Unpublish or delete the page chosen there, and your root shows Home again. Menu links to the page disappear, and an A/B test stops sending visitors to it.

Delete a page

  1. On Website Pages or Landing Pages, click Delete on the row. The buttons change to Confirm delete and Cancel.
  2. Click Confirm delete. The list reloads without the page.

Deleting can't be undone, and the page's address stops working. Home can't be deleted, so its row has no Delete button. If you might want a page back, unpublish it instead.

What happens next

  • A published page is live at yourname.zinstruct.com/ plus its URL, or on your own domain. Landing pages show without your site's header and footer.
  • Publishing Home replaces the holding page at your site's root.
  • Publishing doesn't send any email. If you've set up webhooks, they're told when a page is published, unpublished or deleted.
  • Anyone on the team can spot a live page with changes waiting: its status in the builder reads Live · unpublished changes.

Common errors

  • "Publish failed — the draft was saved, but the page is not published yet. Try again.": a connection problem. Click Publish again.
  • "Unpublish failed — the page is still live. Try again.": click Unpublish again.
  • "Page not found.": the page was deleted, perhaps in another tab. Go back to the list.
  • "You don’t have permission for this." or "You don’t have permission to do that.": you're signed in as staff or a viewer. Ask an owner or admin.
  • "Your free trial has ended, so your workspace is read-only. Subscribe in Settings → Billing to start creating again — nothing has been deleted.": subscribe in Settings → Billing.
  • The button says Published and is greyed out: there's nothing new to publish.
