A template is a ready-made page layout: sections and blocks with placeholder words and photos, styled by your site's colours and fonts. Every website page, landing page and blog post can start from one, and you can change everything afterwards. This article is the starting point: where templates are, how to choose one, and how to use it. For the full list, see Every template, by category.
Who can do this
- Staff, admins and owners can create pages and posts from templates and save drafts.
- Only owners and admins can publish, and only they see Also apply the template’s palette to my site.
- Viewers can browse and preview. Clicking a card to use it shows "You don’t have permission to do that."
- Landing pages count toward your plan's landing-page limit; website pages and blog posts don't.
Where to find templates
All templates live on one page, Website → Templates (/website/templates), with a tab for each kind:
- Website pages: full pages for your site, with its menu and footer.
- Landing pages: standalone pages for one job, such as a sale, an opt-in or a thank-you page.
- Blog posts: layouts for posts.
You also reach it from the button that starts something new. It opens on the matching tab, with a heading that says what you're making:
| You click | It opens on | Heading | |---|---|---| | New page on Website | Website pages | New website page | | New landing page on Website → Landing Pages | Landing pages | New landing page | | New post on Website → Blog | Blog posts | New blog post |
Inside the builder, Templates in the toolbar opens the same Templates page for the page you're editing (see Use a template on a page you've started below).
Find the right one
- Pick a tab. Any template can start any kind of page, so it's fine to look on another tab.
- Narrow the list:
- Search templates finds a word in a template's name or description. - The category tabs show one group at a time. All shows everything. Website pages are grouped by kind of business (Business & services, Courses, Coaching and more) and landing pages by job (Sales, Opt-in, Thank you and more). Blog posts have only All. My templates appears first when you've saved your own. - The sort menu orders the cards: Recommended, Name (A–Z), Name (Z–A), Shortest page first or Longest page first.
- Some cards always come first, whatever you search or sort: Blank page (website), Blank and Lead generation page (landing; the second is a guided opt-in wizard) and Blank post (blog).
Each card shows the top of the page the template makes, and a tiny picture of the whole page down its right edge.
Preview a template
Rest your mouse on a card and a preview opens beside it, showing the whole page laid out as on a laptop screen. Scroll inside it to see everything; the bottom line says how many sections it has. Move off both the card and the preview, press Esc or click × to close it.
- Keyboard: Tab to a card to open its preview. ← and → change the palette, ↑ and ↓ scroll and Enter uses the template.
- Phone, tablet or narrow window: tap a card to open its preview from the bottom of the screen.
- The arrow icon at the top of the preview opens it on its own page in a new tab.
- Links, buttons and forms in a preview don't do anything. Pricing sections show sample plans and forms show a sample form; on your page you connect your own.
Try it in different colours
Under the template's name, the preview shows its palette and fonts, for example Bloom (default) · Lora / Nunito Sans, and a row of swatches for the eight palettes. Click one to see the template in that palette; the card changes too, until you leave the Templates page.
- While your site still has the default look, each template opens in its own example palette, marked (default).
- Once your site has its own colours or fonts (from the Style Guide), cards and previews show your look. The first swatch is Your site, picked to start with, and the template's own palette is marked (template’s). Click Your site to go back to your look.
Owners and admins can take a palette as well as the layout. It's unticked unless you tick it:
- Default look: tick Also apply the template’s palette to my site above the cards (from the menu, Also apply the name palette to my site). You get the palette the preview was showing.
- Your own look: tick Replace my site’s colours and fonts with the palette I pick in a preview (from the menu, Replace my site’s colours and fonts with the name palette), then pick a palette in the preview. With Your site picked, nothing changes.
Either way, the palette becomes your whole site's colours and fonts, exactly like applying it in the Style Guide's Palettes panel. Staff don't see these options. Details are in Create a web page from a template.
Use a template
- Came from New page, New landing page or New post? Click the card, or Use template in its preview. The card shows Creating…, then the new draft opens in the builder.
- Opened Website → Templates from the menu? Click a card or Use template, then choose where to use it: New website page, New landing page or New blog post. The kind it was made for comes first, marked "what it was made for".
The new page is a draft, named after the template, with an address like business-1a2b3c. Nothing is public until an owner or admin publishes it.
After you create the page
- Rename it in the title box at the top of the builder. The address follows the title until you publish or edit it yourself.
- Replace every placeholder. Click any heading, paragraph, button or photo to edit it. The client logos are made-up examples: replace or remove them. A dashed Add an image box is an empty slot you can fill or leave; empty slots don't show on your live page.
- Connect the blocks that need your data: pick an offer in Offer and Pricing blocks, a form in Form blocks, a date in Countdown blocks and a course in Course outline blocks, and paste links into Video, Video gallery, Scheduling and audio blocks. Which templates have which blocks is listed in Create a web page from a template.
- Add, remove or reorder sections as you like. See the Block catalog.
- Preview, Save draft, then Publish (owners and admins). See Publish, unpublish or delete a page. A new website page isn't added to your menu automatically: see Navigation menus.
A page made from a template is a copy. Editing it never changes the template, and later changes to the template never change your page.
Use a template on a page you've started
- In the builder of a website or landing page, click Templates in the toolbar. Unsaved changes are saved to the draft first (nothing is published).
- The Templates page opens for your page, headed Templates for your page's name, with ← Back to your page's name. Search, filter and preview as usual; every tab works, including My templates.
- Click a template, or Use template in its preview, and choose:
- Replace this page: swaps the page's sections for the template's. - Add below the page content: keeps everything and adds the template's sections at the bottom. - Add above the page content: keeps everything and adds them at the top.
- You're back in the builder with the template in place. Your saved page doesn't change until you click Save draft.
The blog post editor doesn't have Templates: start a new post from one instead.
Tailor a template with AI
When AI is available for your account, a tip at the top of the Templates page reminds you that you can use AI on a template (click × to hide it in this browser).
- Pick the template first, so its draft opens in the builder.
- Click AI. On a page made from a template the panel opens on Edit this page.
- Describe your business and anything to change, for example "Rewrite this for my yoga studio in Austin, warm tone. Add a class schedule and an FAQ after the reviews; remove the client logos."
- Click Generate, then Review to go through the proposal section by section, and apply what you want to keep.
- Check the page and click Save draft.
The AI starts from the template, not from scratch: every section and block stays, in the same order and design, unless you ask to change it. It rewrites the template's placeholder words (such as [YOUR BUSINESS]), adds or removes sections only when you ask, and doesn't make up prices, numbers or customer names you didn't give it. Use Generate page only if you want to throw the template away and start over. See Build a page with AI.
Get a template's photo back
Every photo our templates use stays available. Select the block, click Choose from library in its image setting, then the Template images tab. Template images are shared and don't count against your storage.
Your own templates
Save any page as a template with Save as template in the builder, or build one from scratch with Create a template. Yours appear under My templates. See Your own templates.
